Recently, as I’ve started sharing more about my upcoming travels, a number of people have encouraged me to write and document my experiences beyond just photos. Listening to the signs is what got me here in the first place so, here we go…

I captured both these photos during walks with friends; one in Berkely and the other in SF. Although the subjects have their back’s turned, I still feel a sense of community.

In almost all of these photos I notice a theme of “opening up” – lot’s of clear sky, blooming color, and negative space ripe for opportunity. Taking a trip to California from the South East was pretty much a pre-game for spring so it must have opened my eyes as well as my sinuses.

A lot happened this March and I feel like I put my self out there in ways I hadn’t in a while. One opportunity I took was to drive from San Francisco to San Diego via as much of Highway 1 as I could navigate. In keeping with the theme of adventure, I accepted a last-minute change to an all-electric vehicle; something I had never driven before (let alone in another state, let alone for 600+ miles).

Needless to say, I think taking a chance paid off. I even got to catch up with a good friend of mine, Jason, in Morro Bay which was serendipity at its finest. Jason has crossed the country by car as well as bike, and has been a positive influence on my outlook towards travel, so it was only right our paths would cross again.

Despite the fact I wasn’t in my own truck, and apart from the associated range anxiety associated with finding a foreign charging station, this drive was important for me to get used to (and excited for) what’s to come:

And now, for everyone’s favorite segment: Previous Exposures Now Internet Scanned or P.E.N.I.S. for long short. This is film I shot awhile back but only recently got developed so now it’s time to show everyone my P.E.N.I.S.

Again with the optimistic lighting, but this time with a religious twist. I captured these shots during a walk around Duke University’s campus thanks to some very generous friends, and the time of day was just right.

See you in the next one and until then, keep the rubber-side down.
